TikTok comeback in India? Website suddenly live after 5 years of ban

TikTok may be making a comeback in India after 5 years

After five long years, TikTok might be inching closer to a return in India. The platform’s website suddenly became accessible for some Indian users this week, sparking buzz across social media. Many are now wondering if the short-video giant is gearing up for a relaunch.

Website is live, but app is missing

Currently, only TikTok’s homepage opens smoothly in India, while other sections like Newsroom display error messages. Pages such as Careers and Contacts are partially working, but the app itself is still not available on Google Play Store or Apple’s App Store. TikTok has not issued any official statement regarding its return yet.

Why TikTok was banned in India

For those who may have forgotten, TikTok, along with 58 other Chinese apps including ShareIt and CamScanner, was banned in 2020. The Indian government cited national security concerns and said the apps were “prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India.” Since then, the app has remained unavailable despite its massive popularity among Indian youth.

Global troubles for TikTok

Interestingly, TikTok is not just struggling in India. The app is also facing regulatory challenges in the US, where it has been under threat of a ban unless ByteDance, its Chinese parent company, sells its American assets. At the same time, TikTok is laying off staff in the UK as part of a reorganisation and is reportedly increasing reliance on artificial intelligence for moderation.

What this means for Indian users

Although TikTok’s website going live is exciting news for fans, it does not confirm an immediate return of the app in India. For now, it looks more like a testing phase or backend update. Until TikTok makes an official announcement, Indian users will have to wait and watch.
